Kalyani Pramod

Textile Designer and Artist

Kalyani Pramod is a graduate of textile design from NID. Always passionate about the traditional crafts and her desire to bring a sense of design to them has seen her work with many. Documenting the camel belt weaving of Rajasthan and working with the craftsmen was the beginning of this journey. Documenting the Bedouin craft of the Middle East and bringing new designs and changing the product without changing the craft gave it a new impetus. She worked with the Toda's of the Nilgiris and had them present their work at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Her desire to work with women who had simple skills had her setup Rhapsody, a company making her designs for illustrated quilts for children, stuffed toys, patchwork quilts in cotton and silk. To expand her design sensibilities to other areas, had her open a centre for arts and crafts called Manasthala. Research, education and a platform to present and share allowed many to partake in the activities of the centre. A calling across time was her love for handlooms. A project with the central government-working with the poorest of the poor weavers of Tamil Nadu, over 19500 of them, visiting them, assessing their skills, motivating them, a six year adventure culminated in the creation of a brand and products that made these weavers step out from their present positions. Education was also part of the journey. A guest faculty at NIFT Chennai for many years igniting young minds. Today she works with the very differently-abled children and uses their limited movement. To give them opportunities to be creative and have what they do, be transformed into products that reach many and help these children find a purpose and a vocation. A textile artist working with materials is another creative outlet Common Threads. Here she works with young women and even men teaching them the joy of spinning and weaving and exploring new materials in the process. It's been a journey and will continue to be one. AWARDS: An outstanding contribution statement from Al-sadu for having documented the craft and to have taken it into another realm of colours. Many articles written about this work in the local papers. Many articles on the multitude events that Manasthala held from July 1997 to March 2005. A film to communicate the brand IZHAI was another feather in the cap. Received an international award from Ashford wheels and looms for the work being done at Manasthala and Common threads. Received Nari Shakthi award in 2016.

Discipline of Fine arts

He is one of South India's most committed and influential artists. Professionally a painter, a product of the Madras College of Arts and Crafts, Class of 1982, he is a man of many parts and interests. Whenever he gets an opportunity, he visits old temples and ruins, searching for artistic nuances that sculptor of bygone eras had conceived. His canvases mostly in oil, are renowned for their vibrant hues and unique depiction of movement. Colors, planes and spaces blur and merge into each other, to good effect. The textures undulate from sedate, thinly veneered areas to emphatic palette strokes to bold granulated patches.

Dance, music and prayer find expression in a number of Dhakshinamurthy's canvases. He also confesses to a partiality for Lord Ganesa in His many forms. But his most enduring fascination remains the female form.

V.Dhakshina Murthy

He believes that women are the epicenter, not only of creation, but also of love, learning and mystical power. He has conducted various group shows in and out of the country. He currently has an art studio on his own and also heading the art studies at DOT school of design.
